 PEG WHIPPLE PASSES PETS EXAM

Just kidding about the exam part, but Peg did attend PETS (Presidents' Elect Training Seminar) in Chantilly last weekend.  Known as the Chesapeake PETS there were four districts from Virginia and Maryland involved in this training event.

Here Peg is seated second from left at a membership breakout session.

After an already long day, Peg prepares to go into the evening Plenary Session on Friday night.  She reports being impressed with the Rotary facts shared during PETS, particularly with regard to PolioPlus and the work of the Rotary Foundation.  She also enjoyed the diversity among the attending PEs and speakers.

She knows the club  and her Board will support her in the extensive work ahead and is grateful to the club presidents who have come before her.  Peg is a charter member of the club, having served the club in many committee capacities.  We may hear more from Peg at the meeting on Wednesday.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Be prepared to place your Club Shirt orders tomorrow.  By next week each member's tally for his or her shirt(s) will be totaled and the order will actually be made to Russell-Hampton next week.  You may go to www.ruh.com

to look at shirts available and make your selection.  Then you give your item number(s), size and color to Jan.

If you haven't given to the Rotary Foundation yet or want to give more, consider doing it by sponsoring DG Karlis' effort to climb to the base camp on Mt. Everest.  Though the donation sponsors his trek, your donation will be attributed to you by name by the Rotary Foundation and will count as a contribution by you to the Rotary Foundation Annual Fund.  Click here for more information and to sponsor DG Karlis.  He has already raised over $15,000 and is 85% to goal.

There will be a Club Board Meeting after the regular meeting on Wednesday, March 10.

The Club Foundation Board of Trustees will meet Thursday, March 18 at 6:30 p.m. at the Appomattox Regional Library.

DRAWING TO BENEFIT THE ANIMAL SHELTER

Pick up your tickets to sell on behalf of the animal shelter.  The club is sponsoring this project begun by Kathleen McKay, an active animal rescuer and volunteer in Prince George County.  The drawing will be held on April 17 at the Animal Shelter and we hope many Rotarians can be present at this public event.  Tickets were printed and donated by Johnson Printing Company.  Prizes were all donated by area businesses and include hotel stay, hair cuts and lube jobs.  Tickets are only $1.00 each so selling them to friends and acquaintenances should be a snap.

Kathleen and her brother Kevin Post attended the meeting last week to bring the club up to date on the event and to drop off tickets and information sheets.  Kathleen asked us to sponsor the project after John Kines, knowing of our club's efforts on behalf of the animal shelter, recommended she seek our sponsorship.

MUSINGS

Between the newspaper and Morning Joe it has been an odd news day.

Have you heard about the runaway Prius in California?  It's accelerator stuck or its brakes wouldn't work.  A state trooper vehicle had to be parked in front of this car (going over 94 miles an hour) to stop it on the freeway.  Who knew a Prius would go that fast?  The wide eyed driver declared he was never going to drive that car again.  Ya think?

The state of Colorado has asked the Feds to stop raiding Colorado marijuana dispensaries.

Then there was the lady driver involved in a two car accident on a four lane in Florida.  Seems she was giving herself a bikini shave while driving.  Actually, her ex husband was assisting in steadying the steering wheel from the passenger side.  Her explanation to the troopers was that she was in a hurry and wanted to be ready when she got to her destination where her boyfriend was waiting.

Speaking of risk taking--62% of Iraqi's went to the polls on Monday despite threats by thugs to harm voters and poll workers who participated in the election.  These brave souls had to dip their index fingers in ink after voting making them easy targets outside the polls.

See you on the web site--

Carol
